The Influence of Video Games
‘Play Station’, ‘Micro Genius’, ‘Nintendo’, these are terms that only video game players are
familiar with. The video game, an electronic device, which enables users to play different types of games, is
now very popular in the Malaysian society especially among children. Although many may think that video games
may not provide any good, this statement is sometimes untrue. Actually, we can gain lots of benefits if we do
not get addicted and play in moderation.
Most of us often ask, “What are the benefits of
playing video games?” One of the benefits of playing video games is getting to relax after a hard day at the
work place or in school. We need to relax and enjoy ourselves once in a while. As the saying goes, “All work and
no play makes Jack a dull boy”. Thus, there must be a balance between work and play. The games might be fun and
enter taming. It was reported in the newspapers that even the Penang state executive councilor, Datuk Kee Phaik
Cheen, also plays the video game after a hard day’s work. While travelling, a mini device known as ‘Game Boy’
might also come in handy.
Besides, some of these games are educational and
good for children. It can provide good mental exercise and teach them basic skills such as spelling. The picture
and graphical features can help children learn and also make them more creative. They can also learn to
recognize shapes and colours. This way, children’s minds can be developed to think creatively.
Words like ‘good’ and ‘great’ can boost confidence
and self-esteem for sometimes children need encouragement and praise. When they grow up, they will be more sure
of themselves and will not give up easily. Furthermore, the games encourage them to work hard in order to reach
their target in a game. Thus, those who play video games could end up developing good habits
“Calvin, come and have your lunch!” called an
irritated mother. Five minutes later “Calvin, come and have your lunch NOW!” called the now angry mother. This
is a scene of video addiction at home. Though lots of benefits can be obtained from the video games, it is also
undeniable that playing video games has its negative effects. They may also neglect their studies due to their
addiction to playing the video games. This could affect their studies. Besides, without control from their
parents, children will play the device in a non-stop manner and in the end spoil their eyes.
Furthermore, children will start getting addicted
and want to play as much as possible. They will be fighting and arguing with their siblings in order to play
more. In the end, everyone would be hurt physically and mentally. Family relationships will also turn
sour.
Next, some games are quite violent and unsuitable
for children. When they get absorbed into playing they easily pick up traits of the characters in the games for
we all know that children are fast learners. It is often heard that many children end up in hospital due to
violence which they learn from video games and television programmes.
Video arcades were recently closed down due to
gambling activities. This is to ensure adults and students do not waste money either by gambling or even playing
the games. The money should be spent wisely on books rather than loitering around in the video arcade. Wouldn’t
it be such a waste to spend their money on some video games?
In conclusion, the video games prove to have some
good and bad influence. Actually, it all depends on the individual to discipline himself and know that enough is
enough. It is important to limit ourselves because getting addicted to video games might have a negative effect
on our lives. As in all aspects of life, we should walk the middle path. So, playing video games should be
treated just as a hobby.
