An oath,
once made, binds the oath-taker to her promise which must be kept for a designated period of
time. Breaking the oath would bring adverse consequences as it compromises one’s integrity
and devalues oneself. Therefore, what better way is there to ensure students’ success than an
oath-taking ceremony – or in other words, the Pledge of Excellence.
Pledge
of Excellence 2010 was held on 1st February 2010. This meaningful event was graced by the
presence of Professor Dr Saran Kaur Gill, Assistant Vice Chancellor of UKM. Parents were also
present as witnesses to their child’s pledge. The objective of this event is to spur TMGS’s
Form 3 and 5 students to greater heights by putting in extra
effort.
Professor
Dr Saran Kaur Gill arrived at 8.55 am, welcomed by the school’s ‘dikir barat’ team. It was a
homecoming of sorts for her as she was once the school’s Head girl in 1969. Pledge of
Excellence started off with singing of the national anthem and the school’s song by the choir
group. Next, the Principal of TMGS, Puan Noriza bt Dato’ Sulaiman, delivered her message
which touched on aspects such as the school’s vision, transformation, achievements and hope
for a future collaboration with UKM.
The
guest of honour responded well, promising that she will do her best for her alma mater.
Professor Dr Saran Kaur Gill also advised us to keep our pledge and to work hard. She shared
with us a quote that personifies her success story – that success is 1% inspiration and 99%
perspiration. Then, she officiated the ceremony, accompanied with a slide show of TMGS’s past
principals, infrastructure, famous figures and achievements.
We
then took our oath, pledging to do our utmost best in the coming examinations. We promised to
undertake future assignments and tasks well, in line with the school’s vision: to generate
excellent human capital. This was followed by the presentation of certificates to class
monitors. These certificates would serve as a constant reminder that we have pledged to do
our best, nothing short of it.
In
a nutshell, Pledge of Excellence should serve as a clarion call for us to take up the
challenge and prove our worth. Let us face the examinations with a positive attitude. Yes, we
can!
